Michael J. Fox Joins Coldplay Onstage for Surprise Performance
Coldplay headlined the Glastonbury Festival for the fifth time over the weekend. And during the performance, the band brought out Michael J. Fox onstage for a surprise appearance, having the actor play guitar for the crowd in Somerset, England.
"Who's this? Wait, wait, wait, what?" frontman Chris Martin asked the audience, introducing Fox, who now uses a wheelchair due to his Parkinson's disease. "With his Chuck Berry riff and the way he punched Biff, ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Michael J. Fox."
Martin and crew had the 63-year-old play onstage for a performance of "Fix You," during which he worked in a reference to Fox's beloved film, Back to the Future.
"Go, Johnny, go, go, go," Martin sang during the interlude of the song, invoking the famous scene from the film in which Fox's character Marty McFly performs onstage at his mother and father's Enchantment Under The Sea Dance.
Later in the song, Martin explained to the crowd how much he was inspired by Fox and the 1985 film. "The main reason that we’re in a band is cause of watching Back to the Future," Martin gushed. "So thank you to our hero forever, and one of the most amazing people on Earth, Mr. Michael J. Fox."
This isn't the first time Fox has performed with Coldplay at a concert. In 2016, the band had him join him onstage during a concert in New York City to actually perform the song "Johnny B. Goode" from the film, calling him his "hero" at the time.
